Domain-initial strengthening on French vowels and phonological contrasts: Evidence from lip articulation and spectral variation

چکیده
Domain-initial strengthening has primarily been studied for consonants. This paper examines whether vowels also undergo boundary-induced phonetic variation and questions how this effect interacts with phonological contrast in a dense vowel system such as that of French. The labial articulation and the acoustic properties of the 10 French oral vowels /i, e, ɛ, a, y, ø, œ, u, o, ɔ/ are examined in Intonational Phrase-initial vs. Word-initial position. The vowels' phonetic properties are found to be affected by position but not in a uniform way. First, while all vowels are found to have a larger lip opening and width in IP-initial position, the effect is larger and more robust for unrounded vowels than rounded vowels leading to an enhanced distinction between vowels contrasting in rounding. No effect is found on lip protrusion. The distinction between these vowels is also found to be increased in IP-initial position by the enhancement of the spectral characteristics making unrounded vowels more ‘unrounded-like’ and – to a lesser degree – by the enhancement of the properties making rounded vowels more ‘rounded-like’. The contrast between front and back vowels is also maximized by a tendency toward a higher F2 for front vowels and a lower F2 and F2–F1 for back vowels. Open and mid-open vowels also tend toward a higher F1. These results suggest that initial strengthening indeed contributes to maximizing phonetic contrasts between vowels in IP-initial position. & 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
متن کاملProduction and Perception of Vowel Categories
It is well known that isolated vowel perception is non-categorical: “if we conceive of a continuum between the ideals of categorical perception and continuous perception, we find that stop consonants are closer to the categorical ideal and vowels are closer to the continuum ideal” (Repp, et al., 1979). But, such a statement was based on perceptual tests with stable vowels and mainly for vowel c...
متن کاملStress Domain Effects in French Phonology and Phonological Development.
In this paper, we discuss two distinct data sets. The first relates to the so-called allophonic process of closed-syllable laxing in Québec French, which targets final (stressed) vowels even though these vowels are arguably syllabified in open syllables in lexical representations. The second is found in the forms produced by a first language learner of European French, who displays an asymmetry...
متن کاملIs protrusion of French rounded vowels affected by prosodic positions?
This paper examines whether lip protrusion is affected by initial strengthening of rounded vowels in French. Three speakers produced sentences containing the vowels /i, e, ɛ, a, y, ø, œ, u, o, ɔ/ at the beginning of different prosodic constituents: Intonational Phrase (IP), Accentual Phrase (AP) and Word (W). Using video and Qualisys motion capture data, three parameters (lip protrusion, area/l...
متن کاملArticulatory strengthening at edges of prosodic domains.
In this paper it is shown that at the edges of prosodic domains, initial consonant and final vowels have more extreme (less reduced) lingual articulations, which are called articulatory strengthening. Linguopalatal contact for consonants and vowels in different prosodic positions was compared, using reiterant-speech versions of sentences with a variety of phrasings read by three speakers of Ame...
